How it works

How a laser weld is made

A focused laser joins metal with a narrow, deep weld and very little heat spread into the surrounding part.

  1. PositionThe torch, robot or gantry brings the beam to the seam. Fixtures keep the joint gap small.
  2. MeltThe beam melts the joint. At high power density it opens a narrow keyhole for deep penetration.
  3. Follow the seamConstant travel speed, with optional vision to follow seams that vary from part to part.
  4. Protect and coolShielding gas keeps air away from the molten metal and the laser stays at steady temperature.
  5. InspectClean welds need little grinding. Real-time monitoring records weld quality and laser settings.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a laser welding machine?

A laser welding machine uses a focused laser beam to join metal with a narrow, deep weld and very little heat spread into the surrounding part. It gives clean seams that usually need little grinding.

Which laser welding machines does Monoline make?

Monoline offers the MonoWeld 800, 1200 and 1500 handheld laser welders, the OptiWeld Vision enclosed automatic welding cell and a robotic laser welding system with a 6- or 7-axis arm.

What thickness can a handheld laser welder weld?

On our published figures, stainless steel and carbon steel up to 3.5 mm with the MonoWeld 800 and up to 6.0 mm with the MonoWeld 1500. Aluminium reaches 2.7 mm and 4.0 mm, and brass 2.5 mm and 3.5 mm. Copper is 1.0 mm and 2.5 mm.

Does a handheld laser welding machine need a water chiller?

No. MonoWeld machines use air cooling with phase-change cooling, so there is no water tank to fill or maintain. They run on AC 220 V.

Which metals can be laser welded?

Stainless steel, mild and carbon steel, galvanized steel, aluminium, brass, copper, titanium and nickel alloys, depending on the machine and thickness. Tell us your material and joint and we will confirm the right model.

How do I get a price for a laser welding machine?

Send us your material, thickness and production volume through the quote form, call +91 7594 998 159 or ask MonoBot. We reply with a recommendation and a quotation.

Can Monoline repair a laser source on my welding machine?

Yes. Our clean-room centre in Ahmedabad repairs fiber laser sources of all major brands at component level, which can save 40 to 70% against replacing the whole source.
